Preparation is one of the most important things that you will have to do before you cook a meal for your friends or family. Always have all ingredients before starting to cook. Along with the ingredients, you need to make sure you have the correct utensils for cooking the next day. Having everything ready will take some of the stress off and increase the chances of your success.

If you are working on creating more home-cooked meals, go to the bookstore or library and get a cookbook of simple and basic recipes that appeal to you. Try some recipes until you develop your skills.

When not in use, put your spices in an area that receives the lowest amount of light and heat. Shelf life can be significantly decreased for those spices which have been exposed to too much light, dampness and heat. Spices last longer and taste better when stored in cool, dark locations. Keeping your spices fresh can improve the taste of every recipe you prepare.

Sharp knives are imperative when being used in any kitchen. Dull knives can actually be dangerous to use and they also make chopping difficult.

Add oil to the pan’s sides when cooking. Adding oil in this way allows the oil to heat before it reaches the food in the center of the pan. The already heated oil will do a much better job at cooking and flavoring your food.

You don’t ever want to try new ingredients or recipes you enjoy. This can lessen the stress of a chore.

Are you using fresh basil to cook with? Take out a glass and put some fresh basil inside. Make sure the stems are submerged in water. Keep on the kitchen counter so it’ll be fresh for weeks! If you pay close attention and frequently change the water in the glass, you are likely to see basil roots starting to grow. Trim or cut the basil regularly to encourage growth and you will be able to enjoy fresh basil!

Moldy Fruit

Keep in mind that tofu and beans are excellent sources of protein when you want to add more protein to your diet. They can be bought at pretty much any grocery store. You can fry tofu or add it to soups, seasoned well, for a yummy protein alternative. For a tasty bean dish, simply boil them with your favorite herbs.

Did you ever regret throwing moldy fruit in the garbage? Should you save fruits by cutting out moldy fruit and cut away the bad parts? There are no two ways about it; rotting fruit that has begun decomposing. Mold grows inward to places that you see and can make you sick so throw moldy fruit in the garbage.

When buying a recipe’s ingredients, read the labels. Many common ingredients contain items that are considered unhealthy. Look for products with a low level of sodium, fat and sugar to make sure you are cooking a healthy dish.

People use apples for cooking many things during the holiday season, but if they are stored incorrectly they will quickly spoil. Apples need to be kept loosely in plastic bags while in your refrigerator or basement because they rot in dry, make sure you store them in the fridge or in a cool place. One rotten apple can actually spoil the whole bag so keep a close eye your apples.

This allows the fruits to stay fresh throughout the year. This is also advantageous for those seasonal fruits that you can only find during certain growing seasons.

Try putting some cauliflower in with your mashed potatoes to lower the fat content. The somewhat bland taste of cauliflower will blend seamlessly with the other ingredients. Cauliflower is also the same texture and color of potatoes when mashed so it’s a great way to add more veggies, so the dish will be transformed into one that has more vegetables and fewer calories.

Be sure to spread the application of seasoning throughout your cooking time instead of only applying when you start to cook. Depending on the type of food, this can be an excellent way to improve the flavor and extend the seasoning.

Bone-in roasts will cook most rapidly, something to keep in mind when you need to watch the clock. The idea is that the bone will help carry heat to the center of the roast, thus cooking it faster.
