Many people have a natural inclination to be a cooking pro but are intimidated by various aspects of great cooking success. The thing with cooking is that progress can be charted in baby steps, and by following the tips in this article, you will be cooking with the best of them in no time.

Cooking with skewers may seem easy; however, there are some tips that will make your skewer cuisine delicious every time. Not all metal skewers are created equal; traditional round metal skewers are not the best option to keep food in place when grilling. Choosing skewers with a different shape can be the secret to keeping your food from the bottom of your grill.

If you are just beginning to cook more of your meals, head to the nearest library or bookstore and find a cookbook with simple, basic recipes that you will enjoy preparing. Try different recipes and be patient as you come up with something that works for you.

Do you enjoy flavoring your food with fresh basil? Place fresh basil into a glass. Make sure the basil’s stems are covered in water. Put it on the counter of your kitchen in order to maintain its freshness for many weeks. If you replace the basil’s water enough, the basil can grow roots while in the water. While the basil is alive and thriving, make sure you trim the leaves in order to progress the growth of the plant. You will have plenty of fresh basil on hand.

Bake pie and tart crusts for a little longer time than you think they should be baked. They need to be a golden caramel in color rather than pale blonde. The darker color results when the sugar from the crust has caramelized and will have a sweet and crisper flavor.

It is always better to choose fresh ingredients for your recipes instead of dried or frozen ones. Use fresh ingredients as much as you can, because they add better flavor to your dish and tend to be a lot cheaper.

There are ways to fix your hard work and be able to instantly use it. Mix 2 tablespoons of water with one tablespoon cornstarch into a bowl. Stir the sauce while it’s simmering and this will make it more thick. The mixture should be added slowly and constantly stirred so that it does not make the sauce too thick.

Tofu and beans are excellent sources of protein. Both can be purchased at just about any grocery store. Pan fried tofu, lightly sprinkled with your favorite seasonings, is a delicious substitute to meat. Boil kidney, navy or pinto beans with seasonings and you can enjoy a protein-rich side dish.

Look at your recipes before starting and determine whether or not certain steps that can be done ahead of time without having any spoilage issues. You can make a lot of your prep work well in advance.This takes a lot of the stress out of even the most complicated dishes and dishes.

Rather than using water or milk in a specific recipe, try a different liquid to add a new flavor. If the recipe calls for water, switch it up by using a broth, juice, or cooking liquids. Sour cream, buttermilk and yogurt make good milk substitutes. Adding different and interesting liquids to a recipe can help the dish become more interesting and nutritious.

Ice cube trays can be a great tool for freezing and storing leftover sauce. This makes it easier for you to make a quick meal which you can reheat at a saute pan. The sauce will remain edible even after it is frozen.

If your burgers seem to be sticking to the surface of your grill, it might be hard to cook them while preserving their shape. Try brushing vegetable oil on the grill or pan to keep food from sticking.

Make your own dried tomatoes. Just slice them when ripe to about 1/2″ thickness. Then put them on a rack that you might use to cool cookies and then lightly cover them with salt. Then place that on a baking sheet and dry them in an oven that is 190 degrees for 10 hours. After the tomatoes have cooled, place them in plastic bags, and store them in the freezer. You can also pack dried tomatoes in a jar with some fresh herbs and olive oil. Place in the refrigerator and consume within two weeks.

Stop! Don’t throw away those turkey leftovers! Instead, cut it into pieces, then freeze it in a Tupperware container. This will keep the turkey fresh for a month or more, and can be easily thawed to use in sandwiches, soups, and salads.

Don’t submerge the board in the sink when you clean it. Instead, use warm, soapy water and a sponge. If you need to restore a board that is damaged, regularly apply an oil that is formulated for wooden cutting boards. Make sure you let your board dry before using it again.

Good quality knives are an excellent investment for maximizing functionality in the kitchen. Dull knives actually cause more cuts and accidents than sharp ones.

Do not overcook or undercook your cake. Recommended baking times are just that, recommendations, and can sometimes be misleading because simple things like elevation can change the baking times of the cake. A better idea is to insert a toothpick into the center of the cake. If the toothpick can be removed without any batter sticking to it, the cake is finished baking. If not, it needs to be cooked longer.

You may occasionally make the mistake of salting food twice or forgetting to taste it, but don’t toss it.
